The Fontana Library Foundation will host a golf classic to benefit the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Children’s Library in the new Lewis Library and Technology Center. The classic is presented by Fontana Mayor Pro Tem Acquanetta Warren and the tournament Chairman is Greg Bell, former NFL Rams and Raiders all pro running back and founder of Athletics for Life, a non-profit organization to provide student athletics with the knowledge and the tools to become productive citizens and his committee.

Given the children’s area is named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the golf classic is literally “Making a Dream a Reality” by raising funds to provide educational programs and library materials for the youth of the Fontana community.

“Fontana is growing and our community is a melting pot with a mix of many cultures and languages. There is a great and well documented need for a children’s library to serve our diverse population,” explained Warren. “Dr. King’s dream bettered a nation and our hope is that the Fontana region and community will help support the dream of raising funds in his memory. And, since this year marks the fortieth anniversary of Dr. King’s death, there is no time better than the present to participate in a benefit in his honor.”

The much anticipated golf classic will be held at the prestigious and newly remodeled private member-owned - Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga. Golfers will join event Chairperson Greg Bell, Mayor Mark Nuaimi, and other celebrity golfers for a 12:00 pm shotgun start and a “scramble” or “play your own ball” format. In addition to a round of golf on the 6,611 yard course, golf classic participants will be invited to enjoy a special post-event awards cocktail reception, dinner, award ceremony and auction.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Children’s Library houses over 27,000 books for children and juveniles up to 12 years of age, and includes many items to teach young people the value of Dr. King’s contribution to all our lives. A young children’s area with educational toys and a puppet theater, playhouses to crawl and walk through, computer stations, reading areas, Spanish language materials, and much more await exploration. In addition, the Children’s Library offers a host of programs for young readers including the LITE (Literacy, Information, Technology, and Education) program for children ages five and younger which introduces new learners to homework assignments created to entertain, excite, and prepare young learners for entering school. Older students can enjoy one of the small study rooms or join the Children's Homework Club where assistance and access to computers are available.
