Recycling is an essential part of resource conservation and it is important to participate on both ends of the recycling cycle – recycling of recyclables and buying new materials with high recycled content. The Library and all City facilities recycle paper, paper goods, corrugated cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminum, and other metals. In addition the city of Fontana is part of the Zero Waste Communities of San Bernardino County partnership.

Recycling of Construction Waste

  • 40% of our landfills are made up of construction and building demolition waste. During the construction of the Library 87%, or 1,493 tons, of the construction waste was diverted from the landfill and recycled.

Materials with Recycled Content

  • The design and construction of the Library incorporated many materials with recycled content. In all 14% of the materials used in the library are post-consumer recycled material and 6% are post-industrial recycled material. This represents a value of over $3 million in recycled materials built into the Library.

Use of Local Materials

  • The design and construction of the Library incorporated many materials that were extracted and manufactured locally (with 500 miles). In all 45% of the materials used in the library were locally manufactured. This represents a value of over $8 million that contributed to the local economy and reduced transportation energy and carbon emissions. 85% of the locally manufactured materials were also extracted or harvested locally.
